The Purpose of Meditation

What is your story? Are you writing a ‘statement of joy’ OR… a ‘statement of suffering?’… You can listen to the WROAR Radio broadcast of “Overcoming Our Greatest Fear” with co-hosts JK and Deeone and our special guest Lisa H.

The Purpose of Meditation

The whole purpose of meditation is to make me more conscious of the truth. And the truth that I most want to be conscious of is this: I am a rich and majestic child of infinite intelligence.

The purpose of meditation (for me) is to awaken my awareness to the esoteric truth, and to help me understand the importance of thoughts and emotions in the physical world.

Meditation is far more than idleness of body and mind – it offers incredible mental and physical recuperation. Suffering ends when we see our lives from the esoteric truth. Through seeking the esoteric truth, I am able to increase my productive activities and increase my ‘joy of aliveness’.

*********************************************************************
Illuminating tip:

Meditation is not just an interruption of the process of living –
it is a vital part of the living process.
*********************************************************************

Here’s an esoteric truth that I’ve discovered through meditation: Call no one on this earth my parents. Does this mean I disrespect my parents? No, no, no. It means to no longer blindly accept the negative conditioning and influence that I experienced between ages two and six (those 60,000 NO’s).

We are victims of our training when we listen to the 60,000 NO’s time and time again, and deem ourselves inadequate – the sinful traditions of the parents are passed on to the children of the seventh generation. No longer call anyone on this earth ‘your parents’ (speaking esoterically). Parent yourself – beginning right now.

Through meditation I have learned that no person, no movement, no authority is able to influence my mind except through the reaction of my mind … and when I take command of my mind – it is not randomly reacting!

Through meditation I am rightly taught to honor the cause in all things that occur in my life, and I am led naturally (step by step), to accept another esoteric truth: IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME. Understanding this esoteric truth puts an end to all childhood training and immaturity.

These are the great accomplishments toward which I strive through meditation. Try this for yourself. Try becoming aware of what your negativities are costing you, and where these negativities came from. By counting the costs, you awaken yourself to esoteric truths, and you no longer permit negative emotions to harm you.

Teacher: Do you like being disappointed?

Student: No.

Teacher: Then why do you allow negativities to take control of your mind?

Student: Because I didn’t count the costs.

Teacher: What negativity did you permit?

Student: Many, but the worst was fear of failure.

Teacher: Why did you fall prey to this fear?

Student: Because I feared being rejected.

Teacher: Count the cost of that carelessness.

(Listen to the last few WROAR blog talk-radio show broadcasts if you want to learn more about the infamous fear of rejection).

In the depth of all meditation – the passion of esoteric truth is waiting. Don’t give in too quickly. Don’t be seduced by irrational truths that are not the truth at all … truths like, “I am only human”

There is nothing I can do about it – it’s just the way I am”

I’m destined to fail, I was born on the wrong side of the tracks”

The great solution to all of your problems is inner transformation, and a great way to cause this is through meditation.

Please share how meditation has worked for you. Please share what stops you from meditating. Please offer a slice of your life so we can take this conversation deeper.

Blessings and thank you

  1. Wow wow wow! Awesome. I loved everrrrry minute. JK you were my dude tonight! Sometimes I like Deeone and sometimes Rob and Lisa gets my pulse up…. But I felt a certain connection with Jk’s struggles. When I talk about my BIG BIG goals I get totally shy… and I’m not a shy person at ALLL! I was miss popularity all through high school and that didnt amount to a thing. But when I try to get real about my life and what I want to do I get all Quiet-Mouse-Wall-Flower. Its like I know what I know but I’m scared to find out what I dont know… does that make sense? So, If I were to do that same exercise and talk all about my most secret “story” I would sound like a dull CNN reporter instead of the nutcase I am. And being a nutcase is a good thing in my book! I like being a Nut. Thats the Kara who has magical things happen and who has a life filled with fun and joy…. I want to translate that awesome energy into my career! But when I try to do that I come off like a stick in the Mud… Yecchhh! :)

    • Hi Kara. Aren’t you alive in this comment. YES, you are. The real riches found by your own studies of yourself become part of your very nature – and therefore you are never really lost, are you. Thank you for who you are.

  2. Oh Boy, Rob – this is a lot of great information here. Let’s see if I can get through this without writing another book in your comment thread. :D

The shows we did on Rejection have been extremely liberating. It has allowed me to rest in my truth, and showed me some areas that are in need of my correcting. I will do a post on that this coming Tuesday. It’s sorta a biggie for me, so I know I may need to address that at “home”, so to speak. :)

Then there’s the meditation – I am yet learning how to truly meditate. What I have been doing in the past wasn’t even close. Through YouTube mostly, I have been looking at a few videos that share techniques and practices that have been most useful.

I am slowly (and consciously) cutting the strings to “my story”, and realizing that I too, call no one my earthly parents. For so many years, it was the story I would tell about my mom and dad, that put me in the state of being that I was in – a state that was keeping hostage from realizing my fullest potential. I have finally begun letting that story go – and know with a lot more certainty, “If it is to be, it’s up to me.” And, not them.

That’s not to say I won’t still share the story any longer, it only means I will share it to help others – and not to get sympathy, reactions, or pity parties.

I was truly seduced by my irrational truths – MAN, WAS I! They drove me like a race car on the Indy 500! They were almost like a security blanket I would use to protect myself from being rejected further. They wrecked relationships, and drove me into some that I should not have been in, in the first place.

All that is behind me now – it’s time for me to start owning being “a rich and majestic child of infinite intelligence.” The present and future is extremely bright for me now – as a matter of fact, I may need to put that on my list of things to do this weekend. Invest in some shades to help with brightness of what’s coming my way. On second thought – Naaaaaaa, I’ve been waiting for this moment for far too long – I want to see everything that’s coming to fruition, clearly, and to see all of it’s glorious splendor! YES! That’s sounds like a Mind Adventure plan, if I’ve never stated one before! ;-)

    • Hi Deeone. When told that human beings live in delusion, everyone thinks ‘he is the exception’, which is part of the delusion. You are awakening to the fact that you were living in delusion insisting you were not. Congratulations!
Thank you for the contribution that you are to humanity.

  3. If it is to be, it is up to me.
I am the only thing standing in my way.
I am a rich and majestic child of infinite intelligence.
No matter the obstacle, I can find a way around, over, or through it.
Everything is a choice and my destiny is my own to write.

We are currently expecting our first child and I – regularly – find myself thinking about how to raise her up conscious of the impact each “NO” might have on her future. To my surprise, when I envision situations where I think I will have to tell her NO, it only takes a moment to find a different way of communicating – which is generally more enlightening and meaningful!

The person who says it is impossible should not interrupt the person who is doing it. Thank you for the regular inspiration, Rob, Deeone, and Jk.

    • Hi Brian. I suspect that your child will learn NOT to lean on frail opinions when you say NO. You will do what you can to make this clear in a loving way. With this understanding, your child will not always feel like she is about to fall when she hears a NO. What an incredible gift you will have given her. Blessings

  4. Hi Rob, thanks for sharing about “fat rob” on the show! I loved hearing that. There is a definitely a “fat Alicia” that is always knocking on my (refrigerator) door. :)  And I can attest, Fat Alicia takes over when I get too serious and get too hard  on myself. When I maintain a genuinely cheerful and optimistic attitude it all comes much more naturally. I don’t get compulsive and make bad choices I just want to do what will make me feel as If I am the highest expression of Alicia I can be. Things like diet and exercise all of a sudden are natural and enjoyable. But if I’m deluded and pulling my old know-it-all act even the most natural of things become forced and contrived. I’m so glad to be out of that state of mind lately… I can’t imagine why I would go back to that nonsense. I know I have to be alert though because “fat know-it-all Alicia” is a tricky spinster! :) as long as I can say that in a statement of joy that old bitch doesn’t have a chance! Hey maybe we can collaborate on self help diet book?…

    • Hi Alicia. I see that you have some energy around the ‘weight thing’. A successful day for many folks is when no one discovers what they are really thinking. What a sad fact this is. Now, look at you. You are willing to let everyone know what you are really thinking in the name of growth and development. How can you fail? You can’t. Thank you

  5. Powerful post, covering a lot of ground, respect Rob (and Deeone + jK if they had a part).

The thing about meditation, for me, is that it can drastically help and uplift so many — *but only when they’re ready for it*.

I do my part by featuring posts like this: http://ryzeonline.com/arousal-meditation-stare from arm-less meditation teacher Richard Crown in India, to help pave the way.

I think a lot of people would benefit from reading my post as a teaser to this deep one at MindAdventure.

It’s sort of a crawl, walk, run thing – know what I mean?

Meditation can seem a bit scary for a lot of people ;)

    • Hi Jason.

Imagine a man standing on the first floor while listening to a man speaking on the fifth floor. There would be little communication or understanding.
There is a mental level of thinking that is useful for worldly affairs, and there is a spiritual level that is necessary for esoteric affairs.

Have you, Jason, moved beyond the first floor up to the fifth floor, to the actual experience of a sublime thoughtless moments … where pink sunsets and colorful gardens are inseparable from you? Then, I think you have something to say. However, using my website to advertise your wares has me wonder?

The right response to the higher truth that I offer in this blog is to relax and let it tell its whole story. There is nothing more practical than the truth that inspires. Using it to promote yourself has you reading with an agenda that places you on a lower floor level of thinking.

Now, you can either refuse this tip that I offer you, or let it rescue you. I hope you wisely choose rescue. Blessings

  6. Awesome, Rob – I really dig your ‘floors’ metaphor :D

    Tip? Refuse? Accept?

    Adorable.

    HahhAHHAHAHA…

    *Advertise* my *wares*?

    HAHAHaa…

    No judgment here, eh?

What a warm welcome, Rob :) I love it :)

What I linked above, in a *very articulate*, _well-thought out comment_ happens to be a GUEST post from someone I respect and who I’d love to see reach others, and it’s a FREE article, and it’s f***ing helpful and relevant.

  7. Roger Pascal says:

Hello Rob, I’m not much of a meditator. I just dont know much about it or how to even really do it. Once I tried to follow along on a PBS yoga/meditation show but didnt get into it. I like the way you describe it. I think I definitely get into a trance like state when I’m working on a project that I love. I always called it “getting in the zone” like Michael Jordan used to say. Except he was busy being the best Basketball player in the world while I’m just putting up some new drywall. :) . I have to admit I love being in the zone. It makes time fly and I have no worries. I’m just focused on getting the job done and getting it done right.

    • Hi Roger. A real reward reveals itself every time you see through a false reward, like ego-boosting statements. You are wonderfully humble, Roger. Your humblemness will open you to many truths that will take you far. Thank you

  8. Hi Rob — it sounds like, by calling no one your parents, what you mean is that you don’t accept the authority of anyone to tell you how you should perceive yourself or set the rules for how you are supposed to live — recently it’s occurred to me that this is the best mindset from which to actually achieve a loving relationship with my parents. The less I see them as rulemakers, the less resentment I’ll experience.

    • Hi Chris. I couldn’t have said it better. I didn’t say it better. You said it better. Nice interpretation of ‘call no one your parents’. Thank you. What happens to a ship when a captain dozes at the wheel, dreaming that he is awake and in command? This is what happens when he allow anyone to set the tules for how we are supposed to live. Again, thank you

  9. GeorgieBoy 1969 says:

Hi there Rob. Boy I wish I could call no one my parents! They are both dead and buried but I see them in everything I do. In fact, I think it’s a big reason why I still feel like I’m holding back. When I started my firm and my family I have to admit that a big part of me wanted to simply make my parents proud. I’m happy with the way things turned out and in the end i think they were very proud of me. But, It begs the question…. would my choices have been different if I wasn’t seeking their approval? The answer to me is obviously, “yes”. So now as I start on this new phase in my life, you have given me a lot to think about. I find myself asking, what would I do if were totally free and starting tabula-rasa? It’s a tough one! I shoot down a lot of ideas that sound outrageous because of some vague notion that says “thats not who I am?” For instance, I think, why don’t I start my own micro-distillery? Lots of people are doing it and I love a nice whiskey… but all I hear is the voices of my parents who chided me to “get a haircut and get a real job” when I was younger. I’m going to explore this more over the next couple weeks and see what kind of outrageous things I can come up with. Yes, I shall meditate on it! Who knows… maybe skydiving instructor or race car driver is in the cards for this old boy!

    • Hi Georgie. ‘Call no one your parents’ …can you think of anything more ridiculous than praising someone who leads you astray? Many folks treat everyone like they are their parents – taking anyone’s advice, even if it’s poor advice, and praising that person in spite of the fact that it’s poor advice. Wow, that’s a big one isn’t it. Thank you

  10. Alan007 says:

Hi Rob, meditation always freaked me out a bit. I’ve tried it before and it just makes me anxious. I start worrying about what time it is, or I get a cramp somewhere or start to feel my eyeballs moving around in my head. I could never figure out the point. I’m probably just doing it wrong, but I don’t think meditation is for everyone. I’m an ambitious guy so I don’t like to waste time just sitting around. I’m action oriented but I don’t make hasty decisions. I think I most “meditative” when I am planning my day in the morning. I just go into deep thought and start scheduling and visualizing all things I need to get done. I get it so straight in my mind that I never have make “to do” lists and waste very little time during the day. I think I’m a more naturally disciplined thinker than most so I’m going to stick with my own brand of “meditation.’ If people are scatter brains and can’t get their act together then I think meditation will help them.

    • Hi Alan. I like that you plan to stick to your own version of meditation. If it really is your own unique version, then it will work for you. YES! The aim is to have your own consciousness, which is not the same as doing what others want you to do , which is hyprocrisy. Good catch. Blessings

  11. Carol Anne says:

hi Rob. Wonderful wonderful show! here is my statement of joy. “I am a savvy world traveler. I am a savvy world traveler who never stops and never gives up. I’m going to soak up every culture and meet new and interesting people in every corner of the world. I am unbound from the ties of the world and I sit on top of the mountains and watch the world go by.” Shoot! That is fun!!! :) I know you can’t hear it but I can feel it and sounds damn good! Thanks everyone thanks team roar!

    • Hi Carol. You are a savvy individual, so it is easy for me to imagine you a savvy world travler. The reason we seek to be savvy at whatever we choose to do is because being unsavvy makes us unhappy. Nice noticement. Thank you

  12. Hey brother man! One thing I know for damn sure it’s all about the tone of the voice. You just got t to feel it deep within! We all know the people that talk a good game but dont have the soul behind it. I make it point to not open my mouth or make wild promises until I know it is aligned with inner essence. I got no time for phoney baloney people who just want to say something to hear themselves talk. It works for me. I’m not exactly an over achiever but when I set out to do something i’m clear and sure on what it is and I make it happen. I think if we are true to ourselves, every statement out of our mouths can be statement of joy. That pesky fear of rejection sure ties up in knots in ways we don’t even realize. I find its easier to be true to myself by being quiet about my life. Because when I do speak up I want it to be a true ‘statement of joy’ that lifts everyone up just a wee bit!….
As for meditation…. I’m all about it! I meditate 2x a day and just OM out for 20 minutes. It gets me cool, calm and collected to be mindful and compassionate all day long.

    • Hi Rus. Your old obstacles to self-newness have disappeared, haven’t they Rus. And your daily practice of meditation has given you a higher way of seeing life, hasn’t it. It shows! Thank you

  13. SaltySailorMan says:

Hi Rob, believe it or not meditation and I go way back. I have always included some kind of meditation in my life in varying different ways. In fact, I first took interest when I heard that the Beatles were practicing. I became a huge proponent of Transcendental Meditation and still am to this day. I don’t sit in the lotus position any more but I find ways to include it into different aspects of life. I find that knowing the core tenants of meditation makes it easy and accesible to apply to everything we do. Being on the ocean is my favorite time to stop and calm my manic mind. All it takes is a few mindful breathes and voila! Meditation! It’s not some esoteric thing for new agers and space shots, it’s really a necessary and practical thing we can do to make ourselves more aware of ourselves. And if a man is gonna make his way in this crazy world we have to learn to tame our crazy minds first!

    • Taming the ‘crazy mind’. Right on! Explore this intention with the zeal of an ocean adventurer who has found a new adventurous sea to sail upon – that’s you, all the way. Thank you

  14. Thank you for sharing about the insight that you got. It is true that if we can let go of negative conditioning or limiting labels, we will be more free to live each moment anew.

Meditation has helped me learn about focusing in the present moment. It de-clutters my mind. I used to be filled with thoughts all the time. However, after learning how to meditate, I am more calm.

I highly recommend meditation as a practice. What I also realized is that one cannot do without meditation if one wishes to access the truth for oneself.

    • Hi Evelyn. Yes, meditation can de-clutter the mind, can’t it. And do you know what h appens when we de-clutter our minds? The rewards for having a de-cluttered mind is the departure of suffering that comes with a cluttered mind, which leaves us in a state of deep inner peacefulness. Sweet! Thank you.

  15. Hi Rob. I like this one a lot. I Think too many people think that meditation is some weird mystical thing. I used to get heavily involved and sit in the Lotus position for hours on end and do all that stuff… but I just got tired of it. I think it did me more harm than good because I just lost touch with reality. I would start to think that I could float above the world. I finally discovered that meditation is all about concentrating on whatever it is you are doing. Once you understand the basics of meditation you can simply apply it to anything you do … that’s the beautiful thing — I think. When I get nervous before a show all I do is slow down my breathing and concentrate on each breath. That’s all meditation is. It calms me down and centers me and all of a sudden im ready to go. I think everyone should learn the basics of meditation. Either take a class or pick up a book. it doesn’t take long to figure it out, and once you figured it out once — you have it for your whole life. It will change your world. Its so simple and easy you don’t know what you’re missing until you’ve learned it. … that’s just my 2 cents.

  16. Hi John. I like your approach to meditation. And yes, once you have it down, like riding a bike, the skill is yours for the rest of your life. And with this, you can escape the human jungle, can’t you. Thank you

  17. Angry Ramone says:

Yup. I could use a little more meditation in my life for sure. Once my mind starts down a negative path it just goes deeper and deeper into the abyss. I’ve tried to learn different tips and tricks to stop the downward spiral but most of time I just keep going. It’s like a reformed addict who gets a taste and just goes into a bender. Talk about being a victim of my past training. That’s all my parents used to do… ya know, the whole like sucks and then you die philosophy. I see that’s all it is. When the going gets tough I trained myself to throw in the towel and become the victim. I think I would feel a lot more in control of my life if I could react peacefully instead of like an enraged maniac. My problem is I really like the idea of meditation but I feel like I never have time to do it. I mean, there is only so much I can do in a day. Between, eating right, getting some exercise etc etc I just run out of time. Then when my anger gets triggered its too late to do anything about it. Most of the time I feel OK so I dont think about meditating. But then when the shit hits the fan, I find myself thinking; here we go again…. and there is nothing i can do but fasten my seat belt and hang for the roller coaster ride. Man, I feel crazy just saying that. It’s like I’m not myself, but I AM myself. Life is strange…. AND THEN you die :) thats my new motto. ha!

    • Hi Ramone. Throwing in the towel and being an enraged maniac never does the trick, does it. The ‘angry self’ is always insane, but will call you insane if you do not react to the moment angrily. So, remember that this self is a false version of you – it is not you. Meditation can help you make this distinction. Thank you

  18. Joan Sullivan says:

I’ve always shied away from meditation. I know it’s good for you and everything but I just feel weird doing it. To me its like one of those things that people do because it’s popular and everyone is doing it. Like EVERYONE I know is doing yoga these days. It looks to me that they just jumped on the next popular bandwagon. I want to make up my own mind about whats good for me and I don’t see how sitting around and thinking is good for me. It makes me bored and anxious enough just to be alone these days. I spend most of my time trying to think less about myself. I think meditation will just make me feel more lonely. When I’m in a relationship or surrounded by other people is when I’m happiest. I don’t wrapped up in my own mind and feel complete and whole when I’m with people. If I have a choice between sitting around alone meditating or getting out and socializing, I’ll take socializing for sure!

    • Hi Joan. Think of meditation like breathing. Everyone breathes, and that’s a good idea, right? Everyone breathes in her own natural way, correct? Find your own natural way of meditating, and it will help you understand all the problems that come with being committed to mechanical thinking. Blessings

  19. Hi everyone, I loved the laughter in this show! I especially enjoyed the last piece with Lisa giving her example. I can just see her standing on the driveway wrestling with herself over that neighbor. I guess that is when we see the two minds we have going on inside? It is that moment when we see what we are feeling and then doing, when we can glimpse that separation and then LAUGH at ourselves that makes me feel like she is healing herself. That’s pretty exciting stuff. When we see that demon or that false fear, whatever that really scary thing is that we doubt we can wrestle to the ground, and then laugh at it – it disappears!

    • Hi Julie. I like what you’ve said here. Truth alone can heal us of our illsuory sins, be we alone must ask for it by being aware of the two sides of us. Thank you.

  20. Thank you! I would write that in all caps but I don’t want to shout! I have really slacked off on my meditation practice in recent weeks. It has been calling me but I have largely brushed it off. I know I’m happier and healthier in so many ways when I have a regular practice. Today I have read several posts reminding me to meditate! Okay okay. I hear you!

    • Hi Galen. When we meditate, we let the higher part of our consciousness call the lower part back from the wilderness. This puts things back in order, doesn’t it. Thank you

  21. Magic Marc says:

Oh snap! I feel ya ROBOBO! Yo call it what you want meditation is all about bein in the zone. Just bein a straight up stone cold KILLLAH. Just like when I kill it with the LADIES. THere aint nothin gonna stop me or pull me off my game. Yo U seen Kobe and LEbron and all the greats… when they are aat their best they just be straight up meditatin! But check it …. how has meditation worked for me you ask… It gets me LAIIDDD… HAHAHHAAH … so now I’m just usin’ my MAD MAGIC MARC MEDITATION skills for Educatin’ the world and makin a FAT STACK o BIlls!
PAAAAX OUTTT! ROBBBY!!!! Yo hit my cell… I gots to show you the SHIZ I’m writttn..UL like it mOOOOST

  22. Hi Magic. I like your take on meditation – when very talented (or athletes, or musicians, or scientists) are straight up with their game, they are meditating. Indeed, being in the zone is a form of meditation, isn’t it.
One small attempt to understand meditation, by trying it, is worth more than ten thousand words trying to explain its benefits. Nice job. Thank you.

  23. Padma Bhat says:

Hello Mr. Rob. I hope my note finds you well. I’m glad you touch on meditation. It is an integral part of my belief and practice. I sit and meditate twice a day. I think people must understand that it is not a discipline but simply a necessary part of being alive on this world. Just like breathing. Or even just like most people brush their teeth, it must become that kind of routine that is essential to start ones day. Not to trivialize meditation, but once it becomes a habit, one cannot imagine what it is to be without it. I encourage everyone to pursue some kind of mindfulness practice. All questions can be solved with the same answer: Practice mindful breathing, mindful walking, mindful teeth-brushing :) …. and so on, and all answers will be revealed. Thank you for bringing this up and showing everyone how basic and connected we all are as humans. Ps… I’m still enjoying my “180″ and looking forward to our next ‘meeting of minds’. :)
Best to you and your family,
    Padma

    • Hi Padma. Sensible meditation is any meditation that helps one understand what the mind and what life is all about. One bridge to cross over to understanding is the practice of mindfulness, isn’t it. Well spoken, Padma. Thank you

  24. Rob…

Thanks for this! First off I want to say that meditation has been the MOST beneficial practice I have enganged in this year. It is almost as if I crave it more and more each day.

Second of all, I enjoyed how you brought out the negative affect our parents’ NOs can have on our current decisions. Like you, meditation has taught me that we act that way we do because we have accepted what others have wanted us to accept. But we can break this mold, and meditaiton is a great way to begin seeing the bigger truth. Imagine what would happen to test scores and grades if meditation were taught from the early elementary years at school?!

    Thanks again.

Love this post. Truly personal and at the same time, very informative. I do meditate from time to time and trying to release some life stresses.
